Upgrading of Roslagsbanan, Stockholm
Sweroad has been actively involved in the upgrading project for Roslagsbanan, serving as project management consultants and leading a subproject focused on feasibility studies and detailed designs for two level-separated crossings—one in Enebyberg and another in Frescati. The primary goal was to enhance safety and accessibility along the railway by replacing dangerous level crossings with modern, level-separated structures. The project, led by Per-Olof Lövmar, required significant resources to address environmental protection, landscape preservation, groundwater management, and overall safety considerations during construction and upon completion.
Challenge
Roslagsbanan, a critical commuter railway in north-east Stockholm spanning 65 km, serves over 50,000 daily commuters but requires substantial upgrades due to its age and increasing usage. Before the upgrading program, the railway faced challenges related to outdated infrastructure, limited capacity, inadequate safety measures at level crossings, and insufficient accessibility for passengers. Additionally, severe accidents had occurred at the existing level crossings in Enebyberg and Frescati, highlighting the urgent need for improvement to mitigate risks and enhance overall safety.
Solution
The approach to addressing these challenges involved implementing comprehensive upgrades, including the addition of 22 kilometers of double track, enhancements to railway stations, improved noise protection measures, increased accessibility, and heightened safety measures along the entire railway line. Specifically, the Sweroad part of the project focused on replacing the dangerous level crossings in Enebyberg and Frescati with modern, level-separated structures, effectively eliminating previous safety risks associated with these locations. The project team, led by Per-Olof Lövmar, dedicated significant efforts to ensuring environmental sustainability, landscape preservation, and groundwater protection throughout the construction process.
Outcomes
The successful completion of the Roslagsbanan upgrading project marks a significant milestone in modernizing and expanding this vital commuter railway network. The implementation of 22 kilometers of double track has increased capacity and operational efficiency, while upgraded railway stations, improved noise protection, and enhanced safety measures have improved the overall experience for passengers. Notably, the construction of level-separated crossings in Enebyberg and Frescati has dramatically improved safety by almost eliminating the risks associated with previous level crossings. The project’s outcome underscores Sweroad’s commitment to delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions that benefit both commuters and the environment in Stockholm.
